Linnæus & his Garden
Volumes in this section come from the Department's strong holdings of the works of the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné, or Linnæus, 1707-1778.
Carl von Linné, praes. Hortus upsaliensis. Samuel Nauclér, resp. Uppsala: s.n., 1745.
Nauclér (1724-1770) studied under the direction of Linnæus. This short work discussed the structure of the botanical garden in Uppsala, closely associated with the university's best-known naturalist. Provisions for a hothouse recognized the less-than-hospitable winter weather in Uppsala.

Carl von Linné. Philosophia botanica: in qua explicantur fundamenta botanica cum definitionibus partium, exemplis terminorum, observationibus rariorum, adjectis figuris aeneis. Stockholm: Apud Godofr. Kiesewetter, 1751.
Based in part on Linnæus' botanical lectures of 1746-1748, this work appeared both with a Stockholm imprint (as in the copy cited here) and with a Stockholm-Amsterdam imprint. It combined illustrations of the flowering parts of plants with considerations of classification and nomenclature.

Carl von Linné. Systema naturæ: Sistens regna tria naturæ, in classes et ordines genera et species redacta tabulisque aeneis illustrata... . Secundam sextam stockholmensem emendatam & auctam editionem. Leipzig: Impensis Godofr. Kiesewetteri, 1748.
Linnæus' system of binomial nomenclature responded to the need for a consistent system capable of absorbing new discoveries, and a multiplicity of editions of his Systema naturæ (first published in 1735) supplied a growing market. In this particular edition, German names stood in for Swedish as vernacular equivalents to Latin designations.

Carl von Linné. Systema naturæ, sive Regna tria naturæ systematice proposita per classes, ordines, genera, & species. . Lugduni Batavorum, apud Theodorum Haak, ex typographia Joannis Wilhelmi de Groot, 1735. Facsimile reprint. Stockholm: Generalstabens Litografiska Anstalt, 1907.
The Swedish Academy of Science published this facsimile of Linnæus' Systema naturæ in honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Carl von Linné. Hortus upsaliensis exhibens plantas exoticas: horto Upsaliensis Academiae a sese illatas, ab anno 1742, in annum 1748: additis differentiis, synonymis, habitationibus, hospitiis, rariorumque descriptionibus, in gratiam studiosæ juventutis. Stockholm: Sumtu & literis Laurentii Salvii, 1748.
This work spoke directly to the importance of the botanical garden in Uppsala.

Carl von Linné. Hortus Cliffortianus plantas exhibens quas in hortis tam vivis quam siccis, Hartecampi in Hollandia, coluit Georgius Clifford. . Amsterdam: [s.n.], 1737.
Boerhaave had recommended his student Linnæus to the English-Dutch banker George Clifford, and Linnæus took the post of overseeing Clifford's garden at Hartecamp (now part of Haarlem) from 1735 to 1738. The publication of the Hortus Cliffortianus demonstrated the botanical significance of Clifford's garden, despite the fact that it was not, in the view of some scholars, "a botanical garden in the full sense." Although the title page, dedication and preface are dated 1737, most of the plates were not finished until 1738.

Carl von Linné. Materia medica per regna tria naturæ. . Leipzig and Erlangen: Apus Wolfgang. Waltherum, 1772.
This volume combined the durable utility of the materia medica with the Linnæan classification system.
