Duveen Collection
Heinrich Khunrath's Amphitheatrum sapientiae aeternae [Hamburg: s.n., 1595]
is one of the highlights of the Duveen
Collection in the Department of Special Collections, Memorial Library, University of
Wisconsin-Madison. This collection, containing more than 3000 separate works and spanning
some 475 years, resulted from the ambitious book collecting of Denis I. Duveen (1910-[1996?]),
chemist and chemicals manufacturer.
Purchased by the University of Wisconsin-Madison nearly a half-century ago, the Duveen
Collection is noted for its depth and balance; and Bibliotheca alchemica et chemica: An
annotated catalogue of printed books on alchemy, chemistry, and cognate subjects in the
library of Denis I. Duveen (London, 1949) remains a touchstone for scholars (and collectors)
of European chemistry before 1900.
For more information on Duveen, see Roger Hahn,
"Denis I. Duveen," Isis, 87:3 (1996), 501-502,
and the works cited there.
The Duveen Collection is just one among notable
history of science collections
in the
Department
of Special Collections, Memorial Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
